Underpinning the earliest stages of company growth, the Babraham Research Campus is a 430-acre site centred on the renowned Babraham Institute, providing state-of-the-art services for start-up companies in life sciences side by side with later stage, multi-national businesses, thus creating the informal mentoring and shared-learning dynamic. The Wellcome Genome Campus is home to the Wellcome Sanger Institute and EMBL European Bioinformatics Institute, and provides flexible space for innovative genomics and biodata companies and scientific facilities which complement the genomic and bioinformatics foci of the site.

£7bn

The Cambridge Life Sciences and Healthcare cluster represents a turnover of £7bn in 2019-20, an increase of 12% on the previous year

Now a UK Government Life Sciences Opportunity Zone, Cambridge Biomedical Campus (CBC) is an important part of the journey for new healthcare treatments. Co-locating the University of Cambridge, world-leading research institutions and three NHS Trusts with the headquarters of international life sciences businesses including AstraZeneca and Abcam, it forms the largest centre of medical research and health science in Europe.

Healthcare is a major research theme for the University of Cambridge West Cambridge site, including the Cavendish Laboratory and the Maxwell Centre which hosts start-ups and collaborative research projects with industry. A new UKRI University Enterprise Zone links the campus to CBC, promoting access for start-ups to expertise at subject interfaces and driving applications in therapeutics, medtech and digital health.

For an innovation ecosystem to thrive you need a virtuous circle between start-ups, scale-ups, and established businesses - Cambridge is one of the few places in the world that has achieved this
